Our Mission

It is the mission of People First of Nebraska to empower, train, and advance advocacy so that People First and all people with disabilities are able to speak for themselves.

People First of Nebraska acknowledges our rights and responsibilities as respected and valued members of our communities.

People First of Nebraska supports our local chapters
so we can become a bigger, better orga
nization as a whole.

People First of Nebraska is a strong and engaged leader in self-advocacy in Nebraska and the region

People First members serve on many government and community boards, committees, workgroups, and councils.  These trained advocates make sure that people with disabilities are at the table when important decisions are being made.

People First members attend and present at conferences and meetings at the local, state, and federal level.  We educate elected officials about issues that are important to people with disabilities

PFN is working with other disability advocacy groups in Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas to build a regional network and to support and learn from each other.  The Heartland Self-Advocacy Resource Network is in the send year of a 3-year grant to strengthen Midwest self-advocates.

People First of Nebraska has a strong supportive relationship with local chapters and our members

PFN is expanding our influence by organizing new chapters in comunities across the state.  We help recruit new members and find chapter advisors, PFN provides a micro grant of $100 to each new chapter to help them get started and we attend new chapter meetings to answer questions, help organize the election of officers, and give encouragement.

PFN supports all our chapters by providing money to pay for chapter representatives to travel to our quarterly Board meetings. Each meeting is held in a different chapter city around the state.

We have also offered grants to chapters to develop training courses and to travel to other chapters to meet other members and teach each other about self-advocacy
.

People First of Nebraska trains and supports people with disabilities to become stronger, more effective advocates for themsleves and each other

PFN offers training at our annual convention to build advocacy and leadership skills, public speaking skills, relationship savvy, policy advocacy, internet safety healthy living, getting and keeping a job, team building, and more.

We also support our member's participation in regional and national conferences where Nebraskans with disabilities can network with advocates from across the country.
